Hello and welcome to Survive to Thrive coaching!
As family members who care about someone who suffers from a mental illness, we are especially challenged in living our own life. My older brother Tom is the inspiration for this site and what I offer others. Tom's life has been difficult and rocky, struggling with schizoaffective disorder and learning disabilities. He's fought the good fight to maintain a "normal" existence through working and being a part of the community throughout his life. Sometimes he succeeded and sometimes not. But he always tried and continues to struggle with the side effects of his medication, including weight gain and lethargy.
The doctor says it's like trying to move around with concrete blocks on his feet. But the alternative for him is not an option if he wants to live in "relative" harmony with the outside world. He lives on his own in a studio apartment and has been deemed "too smart" and "too able bodied" to qualify for group homes where he could enjoy the camaraderie of others with similar challenges. Being part of Tom's life is special to be sure. It is also difficult. The repetitive conversations about things that happened 20 years ago or the fixation on a neighbor's seemingly benign existence is all that comes with the package. But what separates me from Tom is a precarious line and when I stop to remember that, life seems tenuous at best. And so I too do my best to bring my insight and wisdom Tom has given me to share with others.
Be well,
Mary Logan
